The physical-chemical properties of a chemical govern its distribution amoung the four major compartments of the environment: water, air, soil and biota.

Measurements of solubility, octanol/water partition coefficient, hydrolysis, soil adsorption/desorption, biodegradation, are essential for any valuable risk assessment.

Beside intrinsic properties of the active substances, other tests are required for the preparations which depict the ability for use of the commercial product.
